Press Release Body: Recently a painting exhibition \'From Russia With Love\' by Koushal Choudhry was organised at Open Palm Court, India Habitat Center by Rakesh Gupta (director Canvas Art Gallery). The exhibition will continue till 24th December at India Habitate Centre and after that it will open for display from 27th December till 10th January 2008 at Canvas Art Gallery. The opening ceremony was a grand affair with the presence of Dr. Sergey V. Cherkas (Deputy Director Russian Centre of Science & Culture, Embassy of the Russian Federation), NaNa Mgeladze (Second Secretary (Media & Culture) Embassy of Russian Federation), Maria V. Frolova, Attache (Political) Embassy of Russian Federation), Painter Koushal Choudhry, Keshav Malik (Sr. Artist), Abhay Rustum Sopori (renowned Santoor Maestro & Music Composer), Durga Jasraj (Singer & Anchor), Rakesh Gupta (Director, Canvas Art Gallery), Baljeet Chaddha (Director, Studio Vasant), Victor Vijay Kumar and others. The works of Koushal Choudhry are of interest because they combine in themselves two cultures, that of India and of Russia. His sojourn in Russia has been fruitful, not as of the usual tourist, but one who has imbibed the especial cultural riches of that vast land. Thus seen grafted on his artistic spirit are the hues -- not merely material ones, of the land of the great icons, of the Orthodox Church, of its distinct literature, and its flora and fauna. This comes about not illustratively, but by subtle enough nuances. The fact is that the artist carried something of himself in the northern country, of steppes and virgin forests. He carried India's lush mythology - that of the India of the imagination. The Tandav would appear to be branded on his consciousness that dance at the very heart of India's ancient musings on the universe. Thus comes movement, eternal movement, and the recurrent cyclic forms. The strokes, even in his foregoing works are twisting and turnings, the knitting and un-knitting, the makings and the un-makings: all as if the flaring flames of the almighty sun. These are the convoluted forms of all material reality as of our own thoughts and emotions, and indeed seen in the very contours of the trunk of Ganesh or in the letter Om. All here vibrates. Here is thrill, nothing being ever static. Well, the artist has caught a vital truth and so he expresses his images in an incandescent garb. His is therefore no random work, but of the feelings in his marrow; like the Tandav, the whole of reality spins delirious for him. Any works of his that is informed by this feel excel, so Ghoomer. Drawing on an obsessive impulse, he turns his Russian inheritance instinct with the same feel, even though in a fresh incarnation. His Palekh Golden Oak, Spring, Rainy Elnomir, Metro Autumn etc are such select vintages, with a blend of the flora of Russia and the key concept of India. The result is gratifying. Indeed the work becomes subtler and the mandala form of spring, for instance, evokes the majesty, which lies at the heart of root reality. In here is a revelation, a brief glimpse, of that which transcends earthy time. In these works the artist is seen forging his own artistic profile. Appealing on the optic plan, these go much beyond, for in them his sensibility refines further. Paintings are things which require an intellectual appreciation of their qualities, rather than a direct sensuous reaction, so that the best of this artist's offering entails a delicate responsiveness - mere learning is not enough. If we still want a possible access to the springs of artistic creation, it is to the veins of an artist's life-tree that we must turn to. On this occasion Keshav Malik said, after all we look up to the best that an artist has to give, not his abortive efforts. In each artist, as in each human being, are both gold and chaff. Koushal Choudhry work convinces me, that his golden grain will get the better of his chaff. I look forward to his next showing in expectancy.
